You Are Cordially Invited To - The Drama

By Bessy ADUT

The Drama, at its core, is a film driven by a provocative idea: how much of someone’s past can a relationship tolerate before it fractures? The premise is undeniably compelling. A couple on the verge of marriage is forced to confront uncomfortable truths, immediately positioning the film as something more psychologically ambitious than a standard romantic drama.

From a filmmaking standpoint, the concept is the strongest element here. The script sets up a contained, character-driven tension that has the potential to explore morality, memory, and identity in a nuanced way. For stretches of the film, that tension works. There is an underlying discomfort that keeps the audience engaged, and the narrative leans into awkwardness in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental.

Performances and Casting

Zendaya is a clear standout. She brings emotional intelligence and subtlety to a role that could easily tip into caricature. There is restraint in her performance that helps ground the film, even when the script becomes uneven. She remains one of the film’s strongest assets.

That said, the casting is not entirely convincing across the board. One of the more distracting elements is the younger version of her character, who does not physically or emotionally align in a believable way. In a film so dependent on psychological continuity, that disconnect pulls you out of the experience at a critical moment.

Narrative Execution and Plot Issues

Where the film begins to lose its footing is in execution. There are noticeable plot holes and moments where character motivations feel inconsistent. Certain emotional escalations occur abruptly, without the necessary buildup, making key turning points feel less earned than they should.

The screenplay aims to operate in a morally gray space, but it does not always maintain internal consistency. As a result, some of the film’s biggest moments feel more constructed than organic.

Spoiler Discussion: Moral Imbalance and Hypocrisy

Spoilers ahead!

One of the most frustrating aspects of the film is the clear hypocrisy in how the characters judge one another.

Early in the film, the group openly confesses to serious past actions. One character admits to locking a vulnerable child in a confined space overnight. Another reveals she used her girlfriend as a human shield during a dog attack. The groom-to-be confesses to severe cyberbullying that forced someone to relocate.

All of these are harmful, tangible actions with real consequences.

Yet when Emma, played by Zendaya, reveals that she once had thoughts of committing a school shooting as a teenager, but did not act on them and later changed her life, she becomes the moral outcast.

The reaction is extreme and feels disproportionate. The group, and especially her fiancé, begin to treat her as fundamentally dangerous. This shift puts her entire relationship and upcoming marriage at risk.

What could have been a nuanced exploration of thought versus action instead comes across as uneven. The film seems unsure whether it wants to explore empathy or deliver judgment, and that lack of clarity weakens its impact.

Final Thoughts

Despite its flaws, The Drama remains an interesting film to watch. It takes risks, and there is value in that.

As both a viewer and a filmmaker, you can appreciate the ambition while still recognizing the gaps in execution. Strong performances, especially from Zendaya, help carry the film through its weaker moments, but inconsistencies in writing and character logic prevent it from fully reaching its potential.

It is a film that sparks conversation, even if part of that conversation is about what did not quite work.
