Vivet Pitelon Sparkes´ Books at Stanford University

Turkish Jewish culture and Sephardic heritage have found a new home at the Stanford University Libraries, where students, faculty, and researchers can now access 13 books by the author Vivet Pitelon Sparkes. The addition of her books to one of the world's leading academic libraries marks an important step in bringing the history, traditions, and legacy of Türkiye's Sephardic Jewish community to an international audience.

The collection includes the 11-book children's series "Penga and Menga" published by Gözlem Publishing and featuring digital illustrations by Jim Sparkes, as well as two books about the late Chief Rabbi of Türkiye, Rav Isak Haleva. These books provide Stanford students and scholars with direct access to valuable resources on Turkish Jewish history, Turkish Sephardic culture, and the life and teachings of Rav Isak Haleva.

The addition of these books represents more than an author's international recognition. It also highlights Türkiye's rich multicultural heritage and ensures that the history of its Sephardic Jewish community is represented at one of the world's premier academic institutions. The books are expected to serve as reference materials for students, researchers, and academic programs at Stanford.

Bringing the Legacy of Rav Isak Haleva to an International Audience

The two books by Vivet Pitelon Sparkes about Rav Isak Haleva introduce international readers to the life and legacy of Türkiye's longtime Chief Rabbi, remembered for his messages of tolerance, compassion, and unity. Beyond documenting the life of a respected religious leader, the books also preserve an important chapter of Turkish Jewish history and Sephardic heritage.

Another major milestone is the upcoming publication of the English edition of the book on Rav Isak Haleva. Once released, it will make his life story and teachings accessible to readers around the world.

A Lasting Tribute in Washington, D.C.

In January 2026, another meaningful tribute to Rav Isak Haleva took place in the United States. His portrait was installed at Magen David Sephardic Congregation, the only Sephardic synagogue in the Washington, D.C., area. The portrait was presented to Vivet Pitelon Sparkes following her move to the United States and now hangs permanently in the synagogue as a tribute to Rav Haleva's enduring legacy.

Through her books, Vivet Pitelon Sparkes continues to promote Türkiye's Sephardic heritage, its tradition of coexistence, and the history of the Turkish Jewish community to readers around the world.
