European Film Academy Award for Film Culture to Beki Probst
The European Film Academy has introduced a new award to honor those who have contributed to European cinema culture for many years.
The first recipients of the "Community Award for an Outstanding Contribution to European Film Culture" were Istanbul-born Beki Probst, French filmmaker Marin Karmitz, and Dutch film executive Sandra den Hamer.
The Academy with 5,700 members, will present the awards on January 15, 2027, during the Welcome Night gala to be held at the Acropolis Museum in Athens.
Born in Istanbul to a Sephardic Jewish family, Probst studied law and journalism and briefly practiced film journalism. She founded Queenie movie theatres with her husband in Bern, Switzerland, and served as the Turkey and Greece delegate of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) between 1981 and 1988. In 1988, Probst transformed the European Film Market into its current structure and directed it until 2014.
Karmitz produced 108 films and distributed more than 350 films. Den Hamer contributed to Eye Filmmuseum becoming an internationally recognized institution.
After the awards night on January 15, the three laureates will attend the 39th European Film Awards ceremony, which will be held at the Greek National Opera at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center on January 16, as guests of honor.
