Germany based biotechnology company BioNTech that is developing the COVID-19 vaccine together with the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, belongs to the Turkish scientist couple Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci.

The vaccine candidate being developed jointly by Pfizer and BioNTEch has been declared to be over 90 percent effective and the most trusted vaccine candidate by the western countries. Pfizer CEO Dr. Albert Bourla has acknowledged the successful results received from the phase three trials as "A great day for science and humanity". Both the defeated and the winner of the American elections, Donald Trump and Joe Biden have announced their satisfaction with the results of the clinical trials.

While Pfizer and BioNTech are the first producers in the western world sharing successful data from the large scale clinical trials on COVID-19, the success of the German biotechnology company comes from the scientist couple Özlem Türeci and Uğur Şahin who are the offsprings of Turkish immigrant families. In Reuter's special news cover about the couple who has founded BioNTech, it has been emphasized that Özlem Türeci (53) and Uğur Şahin (55) have devoted their lives to studies for strengthening the immune system against cancer.
