From the Museum of Turkish Jews: ´Ketubah - Marriage Contract´

'Ketubah' is a marriage contract. It is acknowledged as an inseparable part of traditional Jewish marriage and states the rights and responsibilities of the groom concerning the bride. It protects the woman's rights according to religious principles and records the man's financial obligations to his wife in case of death or divorce. The marriage date and the names of the bride and groom are on the 'Ketubah'.

The 'Ketubah' shown above is dated 23 Sivan 5681 / 1921. The stamp in the right corner bears the seal of the Chief Rabbi of Izmir.

The crown figure at the top of the document, which is dominated by the color red, resembles the Keter on the Torah Mantle symbolizing God's kingdom.

At the top part of the ketubah, inside the Magen David (Star of David), we see two hands shaking showing that this document is an agreement. Texts taken from Shir Hashirim (Song of Songs) which is a poem found in the Ketuvim, the last section of the Tanakh, can be seen in various parts of the document.

This 'Ketubah' is a document belonging to the wedding of Nisin Varon, son of Yitsak Varon, and Viktorya Vida Tamar, daughter of Hayim Danon. It is written in Rashi Script (Sephardic Script) and it contains verses from various pesukim (Torah passages). It was donated to the Quincentennial Museum of Turkish Jews by Jak Papo.
