From the Museum of Turkish Jews: ´Tzedakah Box´
The ´Tzedakah Box´ selected from the Quincentenial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews collection... November 15, 2020
The 'Tzedakah box' is a container where the money that will be donated to a charity is collected. The Hebrew word tzedakah comes from Tzedek, meaning justice. Giving money and helping those in need is understood to be an act of justice. In many Jewish homes, it is customary to put money in boxes or cans that are painted and decorated to be a tzedakah box, before Shabbat.
This Tzedakah box belonged to the Lonca Synagogue which used to be in the Balat region of Istanbul. On it, 'Lonca Administration, 5673 (year 1912)' is inscribed.
The 'Tzedakah Box' can be seen in the Ethnography section of the Quincentenial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews.
