Bizarre Jewish characters in Turkish TV series Payitaht (Capital City)
The Jewish characters portrayed in the new historic-fiction Turkish TV Series ‘Payitaht/Abdul Hamid’ directed by Serdar Akar, written by Ugur Uzunok and Osman Bodur are drawing attention. The TV series aired on TRT-1 focuses on Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s last 13 years of reign.
The Series depict Sultan Abdul Hamid’s battle against the Zionists, Masons and Libertarians inside the Empire and against the European countries, first and foremost the British, outside the Empire.
Two episodes have been aired since the Series premiere. In the two episodes, Theodor Herzl, who is deemed the father of Zionism, is portrayed as a man who tricks Sultan Abdul Hamid into founding the state of Israel thus conspiring against him with the British and his other opponents. In various scenes, objects such as Magen David and Menorah are used as props to symbolize Judaism.
After the airing of two episodes, there has been anti-Jewish and anti-British posts on social media.
