Purim Festival is Coming

The Purim festival commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from the Jew-hating prime minister Haman's plot to destroy all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day. This year we are celebrating Purim on Friday, February 26th, starting on Thursday night.

During Purim, one of the mitzvahs is to read the Megillah (book of Esther), which recounts the story of the Purim miracle. Also among the Purim mitzvahs are, giving gifts like food, drinks, clothing, and/or money to at least two people in need, and sending two kinds of food at least to one person.

There is a spirit of liveliness and fun on Purim that is unparalleled on the Jewish calendar. Therefore it is very important to share our happiness, to help the people in need, to be able to make everyone share the glamour and joy of Purim.

A popular treat during Purim is Hamantash, a filled-pocket pastry with a distinctive three-cornered shape. The shape is achieved by folding in the sides of a circular piece of dough, with the filling placed in the center. Popular fillings are fruit jam, cheese, or poppy seeds. They are said to be named after Haman as he wore a three-cornered hat.

The happiest festival Purim is usually celebrated with costume parties for all and many festivities, sharing happiness altogether, however this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the celebrations will be online.

HAPPY PURIM TO ALL!
