
Pew Research Center’s latest Survey in Turkey Ranks Israel as least favorable country
As USA’s airstrikes continue to target Islamic State fighters at the Syrian-Turkish border town of Kobane, Pew Research Center, an American research company, upon latest developments, conducted a survey in Turkey about Turkish people’s view on USA. Despite USA and Turkey’s 60-year alliance, the fact that Turkish people in general hold negative views of USA has led Pew Research assess the latest situation.

The recent research revealed that only 19 percent of Turkish people hold positive views of USA. The study also reviewed Turkish people’s views on other foreign countries.
While 73 percent of Turkish people have negative views on USA, Israel was ranked as the least favorable country, in the survey. According to the results, while 86 percent of Turkish people dislike Israel, only 2 percent has positive views.
But Turkish distaste for foreign powers does not begin and end with USA and Israel. According to the results, the people of Turkey also hold negative views toward Iran (75%), Russia (73% - Same as USA), NATO (70%), China (68%), Brazil (65%) and Saudi Arabia (53%).
The Turks’ negative views on foreigners are not limited to countries and governments. Turks also disapprove with especially radicals, extremists and their tactics. Although the survey does not cover Turkish opinion of the Islamic State, 85% in Turkey have a negative opinion of al Qaeda, with similarly poor views of other extremist groups like Hamas (80%) and Hezbollah (85%). Additionally, a majority of Turkish Muslims say they disapprove with suicide bombing and other forms of violence against civilian targets (58%).
Even though the results demonstrated rather a negative inclination toward world powers, according to the survey almost half of Turkish people still want to join European Union (53%).
Pew Research Center began polling Turkish people in 2002, shortly after the 9/11 attacks. In none of the surveys since then, have more than three - in ten said they have favorable views on USA. Pew Research Center points out that the worst results were in 2003 in the aftermath of Iraq war when 83 percent of Turkish people held a negative view of USA.
