“One of the Toughest Years on This Soil”

At the beginning of his speech, Erdemir said, “According to the Jewish calendar, today is the first day of 5775. Like all Jews around the world, our Jewish citizens are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year.

Bursa MP, after extending his good wishes for the New Year added that based on his observations, the year 5774 was not so pleasant for Jewish citizens, in Turkey. “As a matter of fact this year was one of their toughest years on this soil.” He pointed out that this year was especially one of the worst years, since Anti-Semitism has been on a significant rise and hate speeches peaked.

To demonstrate his assertion, he briefly recalled various incidents. He also highlighted the results of a global study carried out by Anti-Defamation League (ADL) which revealed that Turkey surpassing even Iran in the category, ranked among the top in the index of countries harboring Anti-Semitic attitudes.

“Hate Crimes are not Investigated”

Pointing out the significant role social media plays in the popularization of Anti-Semitism; Dr. Erdemir also shared some striking figures to prove his assertion. Stating that even academics, members of the parliament and law makers are posting Anti-Semitic contents and hate speeches on social media outlets, Dr.Erdemir, pointed out that none of them are under investigation for these posts. He added that, the fact that there are no ongoing investigations regarding these posts gives Turkish people the message, “In Turkey, hate speeches are not investigated, hate crimes are not addressed legally.”  Dr. Erdemir also emphasized that NGOs’ requests for conducting a through research about Anti-Semitism in Turkey and demands for law enforcement have been unmet.

At the end of his speech Dr. Erdemir said that he has submitted a motion to the Parliament regarding Anti-Semitism in Turkey.
