One of the most important objects in Judaism is the Torah shield. In Hebrew, it is called Tas. In the Ashkenazi (Central and Eastern European) tradition, the Torah shield is part of a decorative ensemble covering the Torah scroll when not used. The Torah shield, an ornated plate hung on the Torah scroll, also contains information on reading the Torah, thus often serving a practical as well as decorative purpose.

On this particular Torah shield, decorative leaves hang around it and a star motif with circles around can be seen in the center. On the Torah shield it reads, "I have placed you before me, God. Mr. Mihael Arav who has donated to the Tokat Synagogue, may God bless him; on the first day of Rosh Hashanah of the year 5662 (1902),"

The piece which is made of silver, with added decorative ornaments, is in the form of a circle having Hebrew writings written on it, using the engraving and forging techniques from the underside.

This Torah shield can be seen in the Ethnography section of the Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews.
