This is the 60th year of the award and support tradition that Eczacıbaşı Community had started in 1959. The owner of the Medicine Honor Award this year is Prof. Dr. Marsel Meşulam. He was seen worthy of this award with his utmost contributions to the universal science, and the support he has provided to many academician and scientific activities.

His groundbreaking discoveries in behavioral neurology and biology of dementia, make him one of the very successful scientists known all over the world. He identified “Primary Progressive Aphasia”, an independent form of dementia that destroys language, for the first time and it is known as “Mesulam Illness” in the world of medical science.

Prof. Dr. Marsel Meşulam, who was born in 1945, in Istanbul, after finishing Robert College (an American highschool in Istanbul), graduated from Harvard Medical School. Because of his interest in Freud and his desire to examine the connection between mind and brain, he decided to study in the area of medical science. He continued his academic career at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago.

Prof. Dr. Meşulam is still working as the director of the Mesulam Center -named after himself- for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s disease, and the chief of Behavioral Neurology in the Department of Neurology.
