Turkish Jews killed by Nazis were commemorated
A commemoration ceremony was held on May 10th on the occasion of 70th anniversary of Mauthausen-Gusen Camp’s liberation in Linz, Austria. Around 22.000 people along with Turkish diplomats from Vienna Embassy and Turkey’s Chief Rabbi Isak Haleva’s consultant Mirey Cukurel attended the ceremony.
Among 130.000 people who were killed in Mauthausen Camp which was the first concentration camp built by Nazis and the last one to be liberated, were Turkish Jews. In memory of the Turkish Jews who have lost their lives at the camp, Minister Counselor Emre Zekki Karagol and Mirey Cukurel placed a wreath at the plaque on the camp’s wall. Accompanied by children, the delegation later joined the march which was broadcasted live on Austria TV. Several activities were organized in Turkey on the occasion of 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and liberation of concentration camps. There has been a significant attendance both to events organized in Turkey and also abroad.
Mauthausen Camp became operational five months after Austrian people united with Nazis, in 1938. It was the largest camp among approximately 50 camps in Austria. It was also one of the biggest death camps. In 1938, the Jewish population dropped to 7.000 from 192.000 in only 4 years. The ones who were unable to escape were killed at camps like Mauthausen.
