Turkey was an observer at Holocaust Education Meeting

IHRA (The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance), an intergovernmental organ founded with a goal to establish national programmes regarding Holocaust education, remembrance and research held its ordinary general assembly at Budapest, on June 8-11.
Turkey was an observer at Holocaust Education Meeting

IHRA has 31 member countries and Turkey is among the 8 observer countries.

Some of the decisions made at the assembly are as follows:

  • In 2016, organizing a conference about mass murder of people with disabilities and its connection to Holocaust.
  • Publishing the book titled ‘Mere Spectators, Saviors and Perpetrators: Holocaust and Neutral Countries”.
  • Improving access to archives and increasing the number of projects about preservation of death camps in Eastern Europe.

 

At the 4-day meeting, over 200 representatives from 31 member countries, 8 observer countries and 7 international organizations that are permanent observers got together. Among them were academicians, specialists and law makers. Together they discussed Holocaust as a topic of current political agenda. The next meeting is expected to be held in November.

 

TURKISH DELEGATION

Turkey, which has been an observer since 2008, attended the meeting in Budapest with a large delegation. Ambassador Ertan Tezgor, Leader of the delegation, Ayse Uzer from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Assoc.Prof. Umut Uzer, Asli Pakfiliz, Izak Kolman and Metin Delevi represented Turkey in Budapest.

Turkey has made major progress about Holocaust awareness and education through IHRA’s guidance. Turkey is planning to upgrade its observer status and apply to become a “liaison country” as of next year.
