Izmir Portuguese Synagogue becomes a social and cultural center

The synagogue that was originally built in the 17th century was renovated by EGIAD after signing a protocol with Turkish Jewish Community and is now open to public. This is the first time a historical building gets renovated by an NGO and transformed into a Social and Cultural Activities Center. The renovated building sets an example not only for Turkey, but also for Europe.

EGIAD Chairman Aydin Bugra Ilter stating that this is the first time an NGO renovates a historical building and transforms it into a cultural center for public use said, “With its historical background, Izmir had been home to many civilizations throughout history. Each of these civilizations had left an important mark in this city. Therefore, there is significant cultural heritage above and beneath the soils of this city. We continue working on highlighting the historical and cultural wealth of Izmir. As part of our programme, it is especially important to revive the historical area and Kemeralti district and to transform them into landmarks for both tourists and locals. As the business world, we are trying to create a public opinion and support any project with this goal. EGIAD with this goal, renovated and transformed a historical building into a Social and Cultural Activities Center for public use. We would like to thank our corporate and individual sponsors and our members who had contributed to this renovation project.”
