Prof. Dr. Ivet Bahar Elected As A Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences

The Molecular Biology Professor Dr. Ivet Bahar, with exceptional success, has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), in honor of her outstanding contributions to computational biology. National Academy of Sciences membership is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science and is considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive.

The National Academy of Sciences, based in Washington, D.C., this year has honored 120 scientists in the U.S. and 26 scientists outside the U.S., accepting them as members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

After the announcement made on April 27th, the total number of national members became 2,403 and the number of international members became 501.

Dr. Bahar is a Distinguished Professor and the founding John K Vries Chair of the Department of Computational and Systems Biology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and co-founder of an internationally-acclaimed Ph.D. program in Computational Biology.

Ivet Bahar is a pioneer in structural and computational biology, having developed widely-used elastic network models for protein dynamics. These models have helped improve the understanding of the basic principles of biomolecular actions, simulate their time evolution, and discover rational intervention methods to counter their dysfunction.
