Head of Istanbul Taxi Drivers Trade Association: “Global thief Jewish lobby operates unlicensed taxis”

The first hearing of the lawsuit filed by Istanbul Taxi Drivers Trades Association against international online transport company UBER for unfair competition was held at Caglayan Courthouse. The judge adjourned the trial and granted additional time to UBER’s attorneys to prepare for defense.

Addressing taxi drivers who came to Caglayan Courthouse to protest UBER, Eyup Aksu, Head of Istanbul Taxi Drivers Trade  Association targeted Jews in his speech. “Global thief Jewish lobby operates unlicensed taxis in Turkey.” Aksu also blamed media for making biased news targeting taxi drivers.

Aksu in his speech said, “Here, we don’t want to protest like the taxi drivers in European countries.  As you know during their protests, they burned and vandalize things.  If our parliament does not issue a relevant bylaw or regulation and if the court gives a different ruling which is against us, our taxi drivers will run out of patience. The taxi drivers will do anything for their livelihood, their labor. Our livelihood is as important as our honor.” Eyup Aksu’s speech was regarded as a threatening message by most of the media.

In the lawsuit petition filed by Istanbul Taxi Drivers Trade Association, it is stated that while registered, licensed taxis are subject to various taxes and other legal dues in order to work, in UBER system, it is practically impossible to collect such taxes. This constitutes “unfair competition” as defined in Turkish Trade Law.
