6 candles for 6 million

6 million Jews who lost their lives at the Holocaust, the biggest genocide of humanity, were commemorated at a ceremony held in Ashkenazi Synagogue.
6 candles for 6 million

Chief Rabbi Isak Haleva, Israeli Consul General Shai Cohen, Leader of Turkish Jewish Community Ishak Ibrahimzadeh, Leader of Turkish Ashkenazi Community Benyamin Poluman, Bet Din members, representatives from various Jewish charities and institutions and members of Turkish Jewish community were present at the ceremony.

The ceremony started with Minha prayer by Eli Chitrik.  Following the prayer, Ilker Avimelek gave a speech where he explained how he questioned the concept of heroism while preparing for his speech. He added that the definition of heroism is much broader and that all those who held on to life and survived and all those who had a glimmer of hope even in the darkness they were forced to live in were all heroes.

After Avimelek’s speech, Cantor Simon Cohen’s deep voice touched the souls of the audience in the mystical ambiance of the Ashkenazi Synagogue which has a unique acoustic. In this intense performance, Cohen was accompanied by Elor Velner at piano, Chaim Chitrik and Begum Calimli at violin and Gozde Yasar at cello.

Following Cantor Cohen’s performance, 6 candles were lit for the 6 million Jews who were killed at Holocaust. The candles were lit by Chief Rabbi Isak Haleva, Israeli Consul General Shai Cohen, Leader of Turkish Jewish Community Ishak Ibrahimzadeh, Leader of Turkish Ashkenazi Community Benyamin Poluman, President of Neve Salom Foundation Daryo Katalan and Yasef Tovya. They were each accompanied by their children during the candle lighting. This symbolized the fact that a nation’s future is based on its children, therefore  it is very important to never forget how Holocaust started and ended with such consequences that hurt our souls and to remember the violent atrocity for always so that it will never happen again.
